Dental Impression Procedure

Dental impressions are preliminary for most dental appliances. They are taken so as to ensure that the new bridge or crown will align with the current bite. The impressions form a mold similar to your teeth so that the treatment feels natural and does not affect the soft tissues.

Dental Impressions Are Taken In Two Ways
The procedure may cause some discomfort to the patient but it is inevitable as it is the only way to ensure perfect results. Discomfort results from the alginate materials used or the gag reflex. The alginate materials don’t have a pleasant taste and since they are foreign, they may trigger the body’s natural defense mechanism causing a gag reflex. A Barrie dentist will do the best to ensure that the discomfort is minimal.
Traditional Method
- The dentist starts by selecting a horseshoe tray. It should be one that approximately fits the patient’s teeth.
- The tray is filled with alginate or polyvinyl siloxane. The products used for this procedure are not safe to ingest. However, they are non-toxic and inert making them safe to be used in the mouth.
- The tray is then placed in the patient’s mouth and left to stand for five minutes. One is advised to keep still during these five minutes as movements can cause inaccuracies.
- The tray is then removed and used to cast the bridge or crown
Steps
If gagging occurs, you can do the following:
- Breathe deeply through the nose: This might be hard especially with your mouth wide open, but it will help get a good impression. If your nose is congested, takes some decongestion medication before the procedure.
- Allow the saliva to drool
- Shift your focus to something else: You can do some calculations in your head, count backwards, plan your day activities, or study the charts in the dental room among many other things.
- Sit in a comfortable position: Make sure that you are comfortable enough before the tray is placed in your mouth.
- The dentist Barrie may set you up in an upright position or tilt your head forward to ensure that the impression material does not find its way to your throat.
