How Breastfeeding Improves Your Child’s Dental Health

One of the most important aspects of your child’s formative years is muscle and bone development. Much of the advice doctors give new and expecting mothers is designed to help facilitate this. Your jaw and teeth are no different. A strong, well-aligned jaw is one with well-developed and exercised muscles and ligaments‒not to mention strong, sturdy, healthy bones.

Breastfeeding can play a crucial role in stimulating the development of these factors. When your child nurses, he or she is exercising the complex network of bones, muscles, ligaments and nerves in the jaw area. The sucking motion stimulates your child’s facial muscles.

All of this contributes to the safe development of your child’s palate. Studies have shown that babies who breastfeed are significantly less likely to require orthodontic treatment than those who don’t. And by contributing to a sound jaw alignment, breastfeeding can even reduce your child’s chances of suffering from sleep apnea in the future.

Lingual Frenectomy

WHAT IS IT

What is a Lingual Frenectomy?

We understand that it’s easy to talk about the importance of breastfeeding; but new mothers often experience frustrating problems when trying to breastfeed. Problems with attachment can be caused by an overly prominent frenum, which is the tissue that connects the underside of your tongue to the floor of your mouth. Fortunately, Dr. Chapnick’s general dentistry presents a solution to women in Barrie and Toronto dealing with this problem. If your child is having trouble breastfeeding, it might be caused by his or her frenum. Our Toronto or Barrie dentists will evaluate your child to determine if a frenectomy is the right solution.

A lingual frenectomy is a simple procedure that usually takes about 5 minutes. Dr. Chapnick will remove the frenum using a surgical laser. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia, and most children get over any discomfort or unpleasant feelings very quickly after the procedure.
