Mini Dental Implants
What exactly are Mini Dental Implants?
Mini dental implants are the options given to patients who cannot go for the conventional restorations. The implants are used to replace lost teeth. The key reasons why you may need these mini implants is if you don’t want the invasive surgery that is required for the regular implants or if you don’t have the bone mass needed in your jaw to hold the conventional implants.

Implants
In addition to the implants, there are other options that dentists can use. They include dentures and bridges. The dentures and bridges sit on the surface of the gum whereas the implants will be inserted into your jawbone. This means they are not removable. In the procedure, the oral surgeon or periodontist will do a surgical procedure which places a titanium post in the jawbone. The bone will fuse with the titanium post (abutment) over a period of 3 to 6 months. After fusing, the abutment will be uncovered and a smaller post attached into the implant. This smaller post is the anchor for the prosthetic teeth which are attached on to it. The best thing about dental implants is that they do not slip or shift as it is the case with dentures. All in all, for the results to be great and durable, you will still need to have a strong healthy jawbone.
Mini Implants
The structure of the mini implants is the same as that of the regular implants. The only difference is that the mini implants are smaller. They have two parts: a titanium post that has a ball on its end and the socket which has a rubber O-ring which attaches to the artificial tooth. The mini implants are about 1.8 to 3.3 millimeters in diameter whereas the regular implants are 3.4 to 5.8 mm wide. This is according to Dennis Flanagan, DDS and Andrea Mascolo.
How Are Mini Implants Used
The mini implants will support a wide range of replacement teeth. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, the mini implants can be used for securing loose dentures as well as lowering the arch dentures.
ARE MINI IMPLANTS IDEAL FOR YOU?
When Are Mini Implants Used
With the regular implants, it takes months and not less than 2 dental appointments to complete the procedure. There are also some treatments that will call for bone-grafting to supply adequate bone that will support the implant posts. Even so, there are some patients who cannot endure invasive surgery and the repeat dental appointments. Some patients have suffered loss of too much bone mass to receive full-sized implants. This is where mini implants are used. Mini implants can be installed in a single visit with local anesthesia and without the need for sutures. What is even better is that you can use the new teeth that very day.
Caring For The Mini Implants
Caring for mini implants is the same as caring for the natural teeth. You should floss once daily and brush twice each day. Use fluoride toothpaste.Losing the natural teeth is traumatic and at the same time common. Mini implants will help you regain your confidence when the missing teeth are replaced with artificial ones within a day. The dentist will help you know whether the mini implants will be ideal for you.
