About Dental Implants

What You Need To Know About Dental Implants

A dental implant is a manufactured tooth that is fixed into your jaw to hold a bridge or a replacement tooth. An oral surgeon or dentist can suggest the option to you if you lost your permanent tooth through injury, disease or decay. Implants look natural and can offer support for dentures. They do not affect the border teeth but after the implant, more surgery may be needed in future to make sure the implant stays in place with your jawbone. Before choosing this option, talk to your dentist so that you can be aware of its pros and cons.

Implants Requirements

For you to have an implant, you need to have good gum health and enough bone to offer support to the implant. After your tooth is removed:

  • Your oral surgeon, periodontist or dentist will fix an anchor and post in your jawbone. This anchor is made from titanium metal and it functions as the tooth root. The new tooth is attached to the post. Several dentists fix the anchor and the post in two operations. When the procedure is over, it takes about 2-3 months for the anchor to be held in place by the jawbone.

  • After the anchor is properly attached to the bone, your oral surgeon, periodontist or dentist cements the manufactured tooth to the implant.

Durability of Dental Implants

Swelling, tenderness or both can occur several days after the operation and your oral surgeon or dentist may give you medicine. The dentist can also suggest to you soft foods that you are to take for a period of time.

Implants are permanent. They do not require to be removed after several years like the dentures. Cleaning the implants is done just like you do to the other natural teeth. You brush and floss and they will be clean. Just don’t let bacteria grow in the implants as that will cause periodontal disease.

TYPES OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

Endosteal Implants

These are implanted into the jawbone directly by surgical means. After the neighboring gum tissue has healed, another surgery is needed to link a post to the initial implant. Finally, a manufactured (artificial) tooth is joined to the post either individually, grouped on a denture or bridge.

Subperiosteal Implants

These features a metal frame that is placed onto your jawbone immediately below the gum. The frame gets fitted to the jawbone as the gum heals. Posts that are connected to the frame shoot out through the gum. Just like the Endosteal implants, manufactured teeth are then fitted to the posts.

Dental implants are normally expensive compared to other options of tooth replacement and majority of insurance companies do not cover the fees. Those that cover do not pay more than 10% of the total fees. Before you go for any implant, make sure you have consulted your dentist particularly to know more about the procedure and whether you can receive the implant or not because its not for everyone.
