Implants are Alternative to Dentures

Dental Implants are a Perfect Alternative to Dentures or Missing Teeth

If you intend to replace your damaged or missing teeth, dental implants are a great option. These implants offer excellent stability and comfort, and the artificial tooth they support, is a perfect restoration that is very close to natural teeth. The implants can be perceived as artificial ‘anchors’ that look like screws or cylinders and replace the natural teeth roots. They can be used for both lower and upper jaws. The implants are made of varied materials including titanium, gold, and other materials that are compatible and safe to the human body. The implant should be perfectly attached to the jaw bone for it to serve as a stable base for the dental crowns (ones that replace the natural teeth).

Dental Implants

Implants especially the dental ones have been in use for many decades. Regardless of the age, people opt for the implants to replace one or more teeth that have been damaged badly or are missing. Among other reasons, people opt for these implants is because they help reshape a face that would otherwise appear sunken and shapeless especially with missing teeth. Besides, the implants can restore one’s ability to chew food and unlike dentures, you don’t have to remove implants for cleaning and soaking. You even don’t need adhesives.

Dental Implant Treatment

In most cases, the treatment is done in three phases and it takes several months for the implant procedure to be completed. In the first phase, your dentist will surgically install the implant in your upper or lower jaw depending on the location of the tooth that needs to be replaced. To prevent gum tissue and other debris from entering the dentist will insert a screw into the implant and then secure the gum tissue over the implant. For about three to six months, the implant should remain covered as it heals and attaches itself to your jaw bone.

IS DENTAL IMPLANT TREATMENT AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE DENTURES?

Treatment Final Phases

During the second phase of the treatment, the dentist will uncover the implant and attach an extension called a post to the original implant. This time, the gum tissue can be allowed to heal around the extension. Though in some cases the implant and the extension are a single unit and can be installed at the same time, other implants require a second surgical procedure to attach the post that will connect with the replacement teeth. In the third phase, the dentist makes a crown. It should have the same shape, colour, size, and blend well with your natural teeth. When ready, the dentist will attach the crown to the implant extension.

So, Who Should Use The Implant Procedure?

If you’re healthy, have healthy gums, and enough bone to support and combine with the implant you can use the implant treatment as an alternative to the dentures, badly damaged teeth, or missing teeth. Besides, you must be committed to perfect dental hygiene and keep your mouth as clean as possible. You may also need to schedule regular visits to the dentist for checkups.
