How Your Existing Teeth Support Dental Bridges

Your healthy teeth that are adjacent to the missing tooth space in your smile act as anchors for a traditional dental bridge. Dr. Chapnick prepares these teeth to be covered with Empress porcelain dental crowns by removing a small amount of tooth enamel. The dental crowns are custom-made in a dental laboratory so that they fit perfectly on your teeth and can hold a tailor-made artificial tooth in the empty gap. This is considered a fixed dental bridge because it is not removable like facelift dentures.

Dentists use certain terms to refer to the different components and types of dental bridges:

  • Abutment teeth: the anchor teeth that are fitted with dental crowns.
  • Pontic: the artificial tooth that sits between the abutment teeth.
  • Cantilever bridge: a type of dental bridge that is used when you have only one healthy tooth next to the empty gap; this is often used for front teeth.
  • Maryland bonded dental bridge: a different type of dental bridge that uses a winged metal framework cemented to the back of adjacent teeth and a plastic artificial tooth on top.

When the dental bridge process is complete, you will be able to use your artificial tooth just like your normal teeth. The porcelain materials Dr. Chapnick uses to construct your dental bridge are made precisely to look, feel and function like real teeth. Dr. Chapnick can also incorporate removable dental bridges using precision attachments. We will be happy to answer all of your questions about dental bridges during a tooth replacement consultation.

Why a Gap in Your Smile Can Be Harmful

Having a full set of healthy teeth looks better than having dark gaps in your smile; but, there are actually more physically beneficial reasons why you should seriously consider getting a replacement tooth.

  • Your jaw bone will deteriorate
  • A gap may prevent you from eating certain foods
  • The remaining teeth may have more of a burden than they are equipped for
  • You may suffer from a speech impediment
  • The adjacent teeth can drift into the empty space, causing your teeth to become crooked with your jaw becoming misaligned, leading to TMJ problems

The Tooth Crown Procedure

Can I get a dental bridge in one office visit?

Can I get a dental cavity with a tooth crown?Porcelain materials will not respond to tooth whitening gels. Porcelain tooth crowns are made to match the colour of your other teeth. If you are unsatisfied with the whiteness of your smile, you should do a tooth whitening treatment before getting a dental crown. Get your teeth to the desired shade of white so Dr. Adam Chapnick can incorporate a dazzling porcelain tooth crown into your dazzling smile.
Will my dental bridge last forever?

This answer depends on how well you care for your teeth and practice good dental hygiene. Dental bridges can last up to 15 years or more for some patients. Because the adjacent teeth are fitted with a dental crown by the removal of tooth enamel, those teeth will always need to be “crowned,” even if you decide not to replace your dental bridge in the future.

Do I have to worry about cleaning around my artificial tooth?

Yes. Just because you have an artificial tooth that is decay resistant, your gums are still capable of acquiring gum disease. You must keep your anchor teeth healthy as well, as they are the foundation of your dental bridge. Dr. Chapnick will recommend that you keep a regular dental maintenance program up to date by getting professional cleanings every six months and brushing and flossing daily. These dental check ups will also allow us to examine your dental bridge and ensure it is serving its function.

How does a dental implant differ from a dental bridge?

Dental implants also solve the problem of a missing tooth. Rather than relying on the adjacent teeth as anchors, dental implants are tooth root replacements made of titanium screws. The false tooth sits on top of the dental implants and is a “standalone” dental restoration. This process takes considerably longer than a dental bridge, but the end result is more permanent and healthier for your overall smile.

How can I decide which tooth replacement option is best for me?

Dr. Chapnick helps patients answer this question all the time. He takes time to analyze the current state of your smile with a full examination and discusses in detail which options he feels are the best course of action. Armed with the advantages and disadvantages of each tooth replacement procedure option, you can make your own informed decision.
