Losing your baby teeth is an exciting and monumental event in a young person’s life. But we all know that the tooth fairy does not visit you after you lose an adult tooth. You only get one shot at your adult teeth, so it is important to do everything possible to protect them from injury. Mouthguards have become a popular and indispensable way to shield your teeth from harm.

Family dentist, Dr. Adam Chapnick in his Toronto or Barrie dentist office, Molson Park Dental Office, can fit you with a custom-made mouthguard to meet your specific teeth protection needs. We do not recommend the mouthguards you can purchase at drugstores and sporting goods stores because they will not comfortably and effectively fit the contours of your teeth and mouth.

Even if you have braces or restorative dental work, custom mouthguards can be designed to give you the cushioning protection your teeth, jaw and mouth need.

Uses for Mouthguards

Mouthguards are best known for providing protection for your teeth during contact or even non-contact sports. People of all ages and athletes of all skill levels should treat mouthguards as essential protective gear, being just as important as helmets and other protective pads.

Mouthguards are also used to:

  • Protect your teeth from tooth grinding (bruxism) at night
  • Enhance your physical performance during sports, as with the Pure Power Mouthguards
  • Eliminate sleep apnea by repositioning your lower jaw during sleep
  • Help keep your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in alignment and lessen or eliminate the symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Shock Doctor® Pure Power™ Sports Mouthguards

If you are an athlete, you’re probably on the lookout for any product that can help you perform to your maximum ability. You may be aware that wearing mouthguards or sportsguards can protect your teeth from becoming injured during contact sports. What you may not realize is that one type of customized mouthguard can actually improve your physical performance, regardless of your type of sport.

Dr. Chapnick is a certified providers of sports mouthguards with Shock Doctor® patented products and appliances in Barrie and Toronto. Shock Doctor® combines the proven benefits of neuromuscular science backed by numerous studies in the custom-design of their Pure Power Mouthguard™ (PPM™) and Shock Doctor Braces-Protecting Mouthguards.

Shock Doctor’s® patented Pure Power Mouthguard™ lines are only available through their network of certified dentists with neuromuscular dentistry training. Dr. Chapnick conducts neuromuscular computer-guided tests on each client’s jaw position, in combination with their physical jaw movements. By finding an enhanced resting jaw position, it has been shown to unleash instant improvements in athletic performance because of increased levels of oxygen entering the body.

Advantages of Pure Power Mouthguards™

The concept for the PPM™ was developed by a neuromuscular dentist who realized that the simple act of keeping your jaw in proper alignment would help relax your face, jaw, neck and shoulders; thereby improving your:

  • Capacity for power and strength
  • Posture
  • Sense of balance
  • Flexibility
  • Range of motion
  • Stamina
  • Flow of oxygen
  • Recovery time

Unlike competitive products, Shock Doctor’s® patented PPM™ lines are designed to maximize the extent to which your upper and lower jaws are best positioned to create an integrated and harmonized alignment. Available as an upper protective guard (for contact sports), and lower (for non-contact and training), the Pure Power Mouthguard™ delivers an immediate advantage to your body.

The Pure Power Mouthguard™ Fitting Process

No two PPMs™ are exactly the same. Each plastic oral appliance is made to fit the contours of your teeth and correct specific jaw alignment issues you may have. Dr. Chapnick uses neuromuscular dentistry techniques to identify jaw misalignment using:

  • Digital X-rays
  • K7 Evaluation System: sonography, electromyography and mandibular screening
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit to relax your temporomandibular jaw joint (TMJ)through gentle electrical pulses

When Dr. Chapnick has determined your proper jaw alignment, he will take an impression of your upper and lower teeth so that a custom PPM™ can be made in dental laboratory.

PPMs: Not Just for Athletes

Patients who suffer from the painful and annoying symptoms of TMJ/TMD can also use a PPM™ for relief. Neuromuscular dentist Dr. Chapnick received PPM™ certification to help you live a better quality of life, free from TMD.

Used by the recreational or minor athlete, all the way to pro-level, Shock Doctor’s® PPM™ is used by professional athletes worldwide, who all report improved performance because of a custom-fit mouthguard and properly aligned jaw. Top athletes, including Olympic gold medal skier Bode Miller; members of the SuperBowl XLIV champions New Orleans Saints; and pro golfer Scott McCarron, have used the PPM™ to enhance their performance naturally and safely.

Caring for Your Mouthguard

You can keep your mouthguard in its best physical condition by taking a few minutes to clean it after every use with a toothbrush and toothpaste or with soapy water. Air-drying your mouthpiece is preferred, but if you must transport it immediately, use the special container provided. Avoid exposing your mouthpiece to extreme temperatures, whether from water or external elements. If your mouthpiece becomes damaged or uncomfortable, be sure to have it checked by your dentist before using it further.

Our daughter was 5 weeks old when she had a frenectomy done at Molson Park Dental and we couldn’t be happier with the experience and end results. The entire team was so friendly and did such a wonderful job keeping me at ease during the procedure. Also, our daughter started nursing 100 times better immediately after the procedure was done. We can’t thank you enough for allowing us to continue our breastfeeding journey pain free and allowing our daughter the ability to nurse efficiently :)
