WAYS TO TREAT SNORING

To treat snoring, Dr. Adam Chapnick at Chapnick Dental Office offers oral appliances. These appliances look a lot like mouthguards, and prevent snoring by holding the jaw forward while you sleep. If the jaw is allowed to fall open, your airway can become obstructed by your tongue and the tissues in your throat.

In addition to seeking treatment, you can prevent snoring by:

  • Eating healthy and staying active. Being overweight can lead to snoring.
  • Avoiding excessive alcohol before bed. Alcohol consumption causes your throat muscles to relax, which can partially obstruct your airway.

Dr. Chapnick offers two different oral appliances. The SomnoDent MAS consists of two separate pieces, one for the upper jaw and one for the lower. The appliance is customized to your mouth and teeth. The SomnoDent MAS allows you to open and close your mouth, and drink and speak.

The second oral appliance we offer is the Thornton Adjustable Positioner (TAP). Like the SomnoDent, the TAP consists of two pieces, and it can be adjusted. The TAP also holds the jaw forward and prevents airway obstruction.

Only a consultation with a dentist can determine which oral appliance is the best treatment for you. Snoring can also be a sign of sleep apnea, and your dentist will be able to determine if you suffer from this condition.
