TRICK OR TREAT TEETH
With Halloween just around the corner, there’s a good chance you and those you love will begin enjoying a bevy of sweet, sticky treats – and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. However, when you find yourself indulging in sweeter snacks more frequently, it is important to adjust your oral hygiene routine accordingly.
It may surprise you to learn that sugar does not cause cavities. What causes cavities is the acidic byproduct created when bacteria in your mouth eat sugar. This byproduct is held fast to teeth first with plaque, then with tartar, allowing it to eat away at enamel and cause decay. To prevent this from occurring, it is best to brush within 30 minutes of each sugary snack.
Barrie dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick encourages you and your family to enjoy a safe and happy Halloween. He also encourages parents to help children remember that brushing and flossing daily helps combat tooth decay and other oral health problems. Halloween offers an ideal opportunity to remind children of the importance of dental care and to help them develop habits that can help protect their teeth for a lifetime.
