TMJ SYMPTOMS

Many patients continue to come to dentists complaining of pain in their jaw after months or years of unsuccessful treatment by their medical doctors. This emphasizes why understanding how problems with your jaw joint, known as the temporomandibular joint TMJ, can adversely affect your overall health.

TMJ symptoms are often presented, not as a primary complaint, but as an incidental one, an aside mentioned during other dental procedures. If you flinch or comment about pain when asked to open your mouth for the exam, a physiologic dentist will immediately become concerned about a possible TMJ disorder.

Symptoms that do not go away when treated medically may very well be alleviated with TMJ treatment. This is because the muscles and nerves near the jaw joint are so closely connected to those in the face, ears, eyes, neck, head, shoulders and arms. TMJ headaches have been misdiagnosed as migraines or sinus headaches by many physicians. Arm, hand, and shoulder pain and numbness are often diagnosed as other common nerve disorders.

Sadly, many people undergo treatment, including surgery, for misdiagnosed conditions only to find their symptoms are not relieved. Before you agree to surgery, long-term or irreversible treatment, like root canals or spinal fusions for these problems, you would benefit from seeing a physiologic dentist for a diagnosis.
