TMJ HEADACHES VS. MIGRAINES

There are many different types of headaches which you may experience, and each type is generally caused by its own unique set of circumstances. Two common types of headaches, TMJ headaches and migraines, are both very painful and are often difficult to distinguish from one another. Unfortunately, if the type of headache you suffer from is not diagnosed properly, it may prevent you from receiving the proper treatment to alleviate the cause of your condition.

While the cause of migraine headaches is unclear, it is commonly believed that they are associated with blood vessel contractions in the brain. These headaches result in severe, debilitating pain and may be associated with other symptoms such as:

  • Nausea
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Visual disturbances

TMJ headaches, a common symptom of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), are caused by a misaligned bite which creates stress on the joint that connects the lower part of your jaw to your skull. TMJ can also cause nerves in the region to become compressed, resulting in a variety of other painful symptoms. These headaches can be treated using the principles of physiologic dentistry, which seek to restore proper alignment to your jaw and bite.

Dr. Adam Chapnick has extensive experience treating TMJ headaches, and he can help determine if this painful condition is the true cause of your headaches. If he determines that your headaches are due to TMJ, he will recommend the appropriate treatment regimen to help alleviate the pain you experience.
