ROOT CANAL
Many people have heard of a root canal, but do not understand what it is. A root canal is an endodontic procedure to remove the infected internal part of the tooth, the pulp or sometimes called the nerve. This procedure can save an infected tooth and prevent further damage that it can cause to your jaw, gums, and, eventually, other teeth. A root canal today means you will not be having to plan one or more extractions and dental implant procedures in the future.
In a root canal, we drill through the damaged enamel so we can remove all the harborages the bacteria are using, and to allow us access to the infected interior of the tooth. After cleaning the external part of the tooth, we clean out the infected interior of the tooth. We utilize digital x-rays to ensure we have removed all the infected material. Then we fill the interior of the tooth with material that seals it and supports the enamel, and cover the tooth with a dental crown that strengthens and protects the tooth.
