PROS AND CONS OF PORCELAIN VENEERS

Some of today’s cosmetic dentistry tooth restoration procedures are confusingly similar to one another, as it is with porcelain veneers. Dr. Adam Chapnick offers both Empress® veneers and Lumineers®. As with any procedure, the pros and cons of porcelain veneers can help you determine your best choice.

Empress® Veneers

The porcelain material used for Empress® veneers is very strong with a translucence that looks so natural it is impossible for anyone to know that you have veneers.

Empress® veneers are about 0.5 mm thick and require removal of a thin layer of natural tooth enamel for them to fit naturally and not look bulky. These veneers are made at a lab and will require two visits to complete.

Lumineers® Veneers

Lumineers® are revolutionary because they are exceptionally thin, about 0.3 mm thick, and often require no tooth preparation, making the procedure painless. When your tooth enamel is left intact, the procedure is reversible should you ever choose to have Lumineers® removed. The porcelain used for Lumineers® is very strong and these veneers can last about 20 years.

For some people, placing the Lumineers® over an unprepared tooth can leave it feeling bulky. If this is the case, some preparation of your teeth may be required. Lumineers® thinness make them less effective at changing tooth color than Empress® and may be less translucent.
