OPEN YOUR MIND TO GUM DISEASE PREVENTION

When we think about dental health, we typically consider only our teeth. In spite of this, our gums are a critical component of oral health. In fact, we should be monitoring for gum disease regularly as unchecked gum disease can lead to some several overall health consequences.

Types of Gum Disease

The two types of gum disease are:

  • Periodontitis – This is severe gum disease which damages tissue and bone which support your teeth.
  • Gingivitis – Mild gum disease which affects solely the gums.

In addition to affecting your overall physical health, there are a number of whole body health issues that gum disease has been connected to. These include:

  • Stroke
  • Heart Disease
  • Diabetes

Early detection and treatment will prevent further spread of any developing gum disease. Our Barrie general dentist, Adam Chapnick, recommends maintaining your dental exams and brushing correctly and flossing regularly as other preventative measures.
