MODERN HABITS INCREASE GUM DISEASE RISKS

A new study conducted by periodontists at King’s College London has found that ancient peoples had lower instances of gum disease. For this study, researchers looked at teeth from skulls dating back to c. 200-400 BCE, finding indications of disease in only 5 percent of samples. By contrast, an estimated 80 percent of adults in North America will experience gum disease at some point and 15 to 30 percent will suffer chronic periodontal issues. Researchers suggest that smoking alone plays the largest role in this increase of gum disease.

Smoking is a known risk factor for gum disease. Unfortunately, unlike other risks for this disease, its effects cannot be undone by brushing and flossing. In addition to gum disease, smoking increases risks of oral cancer and other serious oral and systemic health issues. This is, of course, to say nothing of the chronic bad breath and significant staining of teeth caused by this habit.

Barrie dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick strongly encourages our patients who smoke to quit. He would be happy to discuss the many benefits of not smoking and provide you with encouragement and resources during your next routine appointment.
