HOW TO CHOOSE A GENERAL DENTIST

If you are looking for a general dentist to take care of your dental needs, you should select them with care. Although all dentists are certified to be able to perform dental care at an adequate level, not every dentist is the right one for you. Here are some steps for finding the best dentist for you.

Consider Your Needs

Before you can find the dentist that best fits your needs, you need to take careful stock of what those needs are. Do you just need care for yourself? Do you need a family dentist? Are you going to want cosmetic dentistry procedures or only basic dental care? Do you have concerns about your bite or TMJ? Do you want a dentist who is able to provide specialized care, or would it be okay to be referred for complex procedures?

Get Referrals

Once you’ve defined your dental needs, it’s time to talk to friends and family about their dentists. Most people are just okay with their dental care, but if a person has a very good dentist, they are happy to talk about how their dentist is better than their previous one.

Put recommended dentists on your list. Ideally, you should have at least three dentists you consider seriously.

Visit Websites

These days most dentists have websites. Check the websites of dentists you’ve been referred to and make sure they meet your needs. You may have different needs from friends and family, so it’s important to evaluate even referred dentists. If you don’t have enough referred dentists from friends and family, searching for other convenient dentists in the area can help you find additional options.

While you’re online, check out reviews. Don’t be swayed by a single terrible or glowing review. Instead, judge on the basis of the general tenor of reviews.

Schedule Visits

Schedule visits with the dentists on your list. Initial visits vary significantly from dentist to dentist, but you should be able to meet the dentist for an introduction. The visit should not be too rushed, and you should feel valued. After all, if they don’t care enough to treat you well to get your business, they’re not going to treat you well to keep it. Ideally, you’ll be working with a dentist for a long time, so it’s important to find one you like, as well as one you trust.

You should visit at least three dentists before making your decision. That way you have reasonable context for making an informed decision. And if you don’t like any of the dentists you visit, start your search again. There are many dentists out there, and you can find the perfect dentist for you if you try.
