EYE PRESSURE AND TMJ

TMJ has several symptoms that may appear to have nothing at all to do with the jaw. One of these is ocular pressure which can produce pain around and behind the eyes. If you suffer from frequent pain in or around the eyes, it may be time to call Barrie dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick at (647) 504-4407 to schedule a neuromuscular evaluation.

Misalignment in the jaw places pressure on the trigeminal nerve – of which one branch is the ophthalmic nerve. The ophthalmic nerve supplies branches to the:

  • Cornea
  • Ciliary body
  • Iris
  • Lacrimal gland
  • Conjunctiva

This same nerve supplies branches to the skin of the forehead, eyebrows, eyelid, and nose, as well as to the mucus membrane of the nasal cavity. Even a small amount of pressure placed on the trigeminal nerve by TMJ can trigger discomfort in all branches of the ophthalmic nerve and result in significant and recurring pain.

We offer a range of TMJ treatment options at our Barrie, Ontario office. By treating the underlying condition, pain in all branches of the trigeminal nerve can often be relieved entirely, allowing for lasting and medication-free pain relief.

Are you suffering from pain in or around the eyes? Contact Chapnick Dental Office to schedule a neuromuscular consultation and find out if TMJ is the cause.
