DENTAL FEARS AND PHOBIAS
75% of adults experience some sort of dental fear ranging from mild to severe. Some patients are so fearful that they avoid the dentist at all cost, only visiting a dentist when something breaks or they are in severe pain. As dental health care providers it is important for us to recognize and understand what our patients perceive as a ‘scary’ situation.
Most fears stem from people traumatic experiences or a negative impression from uncaring or cold providers. Patients often have a perceived lack of control.
It is important for patients to take some control back. One should contact and meet the staff at a few dental offices to select an office that would be best suited to them, and make them feel most comfortable. Offices that understand this process will facilitate these meetings with free consultations or ‘meet and greet’ type appointments.
Positive reinforcement, clear explanations of planned treatment with visual aids are used to fully inform our patients of what to expect before any treatment is started. We can offer longer appontement times so our patients never feel rushed. we offer warm pillows, chair massagers, relaxing music to help our patinets feel relaxed and take their minds of their treatments. For patients that need a little help relaxing, we offer Nitrous Oxide sedation (laughting gas). This is one of the safest ways to relax children and nervous adults for all types of general dentistry needs.
These tools, combined with our genuine care for each individuals needs and having the time to provide our patients with the utmost quality care, we are able to elevate patients fears and provide for a more comfortable environment for your dental care.
