MAINTAINING YOUR NEWLY WHITENING SMILE

Along with your tooth whitening procedure, cosmetic dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick makes sure you know how to maintain your newly whitened smile. There are a number of steps you can take to maintain the whiteness ranging from daily hygiene to changing some habits. As with anything, some steps will be easier than others.

Naturally, good oral hygiene is at the top of the list. Even when you expose your teeth to elements that can discolor them such as coffee, berries and red wine, rinsing your mouth afterward is beneficial, especially for maintaining your nice white smile. Cutting back on foods that are highly pigmented will also help maintain the effects of your tooth whitening procedure.

Brushing with a soft-bristle toothbrush two or three times a day with non-abrasive, non-whitening toothpaste is the minimum recommendation. Look for toothpaste that contains fluoride and be sure you gently brush every surface of every tooth. Flossing after brushing helps remove additional plaque that can build up and give your teeth a slightly yellowish hue.

Using a mouthwash that contains fluoride is also very helpful. Again, you want to look for a brand that is non-abrasive and follow your brushing and flossing routine with a quick rinse. By using a mouthwash, you help to reduce plaque-causing bacteria in your mouth.
