CAN I REMOVE TARTAR FROM MY TEETH AT HOME?
Tartar is a byproduct of plaque – a biofilm that naturally forms on the teeth. This calcified substance can prove very hard to remove at home, particularly when it is allowed to form underneath the gum line.
Your best defense against tartar is brushing your teeth after every meal and flossing at least twice a day. These efforts should be complemented by biannual visits with Barrie dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick to fully remove any tartar that has not been removed at home. Left in place, tartar can secure acids to the teeth that lead to decay, infection, and gum disease.
Controlling Tartar at Home
You can help control tartar at home by brushing regularly with a soft bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. Soft bristles prevent enamel damage but are still strong enough to remove hardened plaque. Fluoride has been shown to protect teeth against the bacteria responsible for tartar. Toothpastes that contain baking soda can also help remove tartar, but should not be used by people with restorations such as porcelain crowns or veneers.
Crunchy fruits and vegetables can also help clean teeth and prevent tartar. Choosing snacks like apples, carrots, or celery sticks can be beneficial for both oral and systemic health and may even reduce risks for gum disease and tooth decay.
