CAN FOOD HELP PREVENT CAVITIES?
Researchers have recently discovered that purple nutsedge, a food staple in Ancient Sudan, may hold the key to the remarkable dental health of remains in a 2,000 year old burial site. At the burial site Al Khiday 2 in Central Sudan, fewer than one percent of the remains are impacted by tooth decay – a phenomenon now being attributed to the bacterial inhibiting properties found in the tubers of what we in Ontario consider a noxious weed.
Barrie dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick does not recommend eating the bitter tubers of the purple nutsedge to fight tooth decay. He does, however, recommend eating a diet rich in calcium, magnesium, iron, and B vitamins to help keep teeth and gums healthy. Combining a healthy diet with daily brushing and flossing can help protect against tooth decay and ensure strong, healthy teeth for a lifetime.
Your regularly scheduled dental visits are also an important part of your oral care. These visits allow us to clean and polish your teeth while enabling Dr. Chapnick to identify early warning signs of tooth decay and provide swift treatment when necessary.
