DO I HAVE GINGIVITIS?
Symptoms of gingivitis may be unnoticeable at first, with a slight reddening of the gums or minor swelling often being the initial signs. However, these beginning symptoms can quickly give way to more obvious indications of gingivitis such as:
- Gums that bleed easily
- A bad taste in the mouth that does not respond to brushing
- Chronic bad breath
- Visible changes to gum tissue
These issues indicate gum disease and should be brought to the immediate attention of Barrie dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick. When caught early on, noninvasive treatments are often quite successful at eliminating the problem.
Periodontitis
Gingivitis can often be treated through improvements to your oral hygiene routine. In some cases, scaling and root planing or laser therapy will also be used to fully eliminate the disease. However, when left untreated, gingivitis will progress to periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease that may require surgical intervention to treat.
Periodontitis is not only difficult to treat, it can lead to tooth loss, bone necrosis, and increased risks for a number of systemic illnesses. You can avoid these issues by seeking assistance at the first sign of gingivitis and maintaining your regularly scheduled checkups with Dr. Cahpnick.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of gum disease, please contact the Chapnick Dental Office today to schedule a periodontal examination with Barrie, Ontario dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick.
