UNDERSTANDING THE TRIGEMINAL NERVE
The trigeminal nerve is responsible for supplying a majority sensation to the face and head. It is also responsible for biting, chewing, and similar masticatory functions. Running through the jaw, it is this nerve that becomes compressed by TMJ and causes symptoms including facial pain, headaches, and lockjaw. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, Barrie dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick can provide you with a neuromuscular evaluation to determine if TMD is the cause.
The trigeminal nerve has three main braches:
- Ophthalmic (eyes)
- Maxillary (sinus)
- Mandibular (jaw)
Pressure on this nerve brought about my jaw misalignment can cause pain sensations in each branch, along with functional disruptions impacting jaw movement. The best way to address these issues is often through physiologic dentistry, the branch of dentistry that focuses exclusively on the diagnosing and treating of TMD.
Dr. Chapnick has studied physiologic dentistry at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies and has years of experience diagnosing and treating this common disorder. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology and personalizing each treatment option, Dr. Chapnick can help you find comfort by relieving pressure on the trigeminal nerve and restoring proper alignment to your jaw.
