HOW LONG DO DENTAL IMPLANTS LAST?
One of the reasons our Barrie general dentists recommend dental implants to patients who need to replace a missing tooth is that they are sturdy, long-lasting pieces of dental work. In fact, if properly cared for, dental implants can last you for decades.
The durability of dental implants is largely a result of two dynamics. First, implants are made from very strong material. The actual implant roots are titanium, while the dental crowns that top most implants are usually made from porcelain.
Second, implants are firmly rooted in your jaw by a process known as “osseointegration.” Our Barrie general dentists will place the titanium supports in your jaw. After that, we will wait between three and six months. During this time, your jaw will be slowly integrating the implant roots into its bone material.
Once the process is complete, your implants will have a strong, firm foundation in your jaw.
Now, you’ll still have to care for your dental implants as you would your natural teeth. This means brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, seeing our Barrie general dentists at least twice a year and avoiding grinding and clenching of your teeth.
If you do practice sound dental hygiene, your dental implants might well last you the rest of your life.
