CAUSES OF CAVITIES
Cavities are tiny openings or holes in the hard enamel of your teeth. These permanent areas of damage are caused by tooth decay – the process of bacteria damaging enamel on your teeth. Bacteria are present in dental plaque, a natural byproduct of every food and beverage you consume. When not removed through dental hygiene and teeth cleaning, plaque can harden into tartar which holds bacteria and acids fast to your teeth, eating away enamel, and resulting in cavities.
Preventing Cavities
Cavities can affect anyone with teeth, but there are some risk factors to be aware of. Molars and premolars are more likely to get cavities as they are harder to clean at home. Frequent snacking on sugary, carbonated, or carbohydrate-dense foods and drinks can increase the risk for cavities on any of your teeth, particularly if you are not brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste after every snack. Your at-home routine is essential for preventing cavities and should include brushing after every meal and flossing at least once a day.
Equally important as your home routine is visits to Barrie dentist, Dr. Adam Chapnick, every six months for professional cleanings and thorough examinations. Professional cleanings can remove tartar and buildup, even on those hard to reach back teeth, and Dr. Chapnick’s examinations can detect cavities and treat them before they become serious problems.
