TMJ HEADACHES VS. MIGRAINE HEADACHES

TMJ headaches are often persistent and severe, but these headaches have different causes from migraine headaches.

TMJ headaches are caused by:

  • Misalignment of the jaw or bite
  • Jaw clenching
  • Tooth grinding
  • Displaced TMJ disc

It is important to treat TMJ-related headaches and migraines separately. Migraines will not be alleviated by TMJ treatments dealing with the jaw and teeth because these are not the causes of migraines.

The causes of migraines are not well understood, but there are documented triggers for migraines, including:

  • Stress
  • Bright lights and loud noises
  • Certain foods and beverages
  • Female hormonal changes

Unlike TMJ headaches, migraines are accompanied by nausea, moments of impaired vision, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine treatments often consist of preventative measures and medications.
