NIGHTGUARD OR BITEGUARD OR ORTHOTIC
All dental appliances are not the same. Anyone playing a contact sport should be familiar with protective mouthguards. These can be simply protective or, if designed by a physiologic dentist – they can be performance enhancing like the PPM mouthguard has proven to be!
But let’s talk for a minute about the other type of mouthguard. The one that your dentist recommends to protect your teeth from yourself! A nightgurard, biteguard or orthotic are not all the same appliance and you should ask your dentist the the proper questions two decide which one is best for you.
Do you need an appliance that simply protects your enamel from wear or one to reduce pain from jaw muscles or headache?
Do you want an appliance that will reduce the damage to your teeth fromgrinding or one that will train you to stop grinding all-together ?
Do you want an appliance that will cover all of your teeth or a few, one arch or both arches, like a MAS (mandibular advancement splint to stop you from snoring?
