Why Should I Choose Porcelain Veneers?

As you may know, porcelain veneers are very important for improving the appearance of people with dental imperfections such as stained, cracked, crooked, twisted, spaced, broken, tooth decay or have a wide gap between two teeth.

Porcelain veneers are one of the most effective and the most common procedure incorporated in cosmetic dentistry. They are an easy way to disguise the imperfections and achieve the stunning smile you’ve been dreaming of.

Are there health benefits to veneers?

Veneers can be used in strengthening weaker teeth even if they don’t have some form of decay. This is due to the extra support of the ceramic shell of a veneer. Porcelain veneers provide slight correction to crooked teeth and bite patterns over time. Veneers can also promote dental hygiene. When patients notice they have a beautifully enhanced, natural smile, they tend to practice overall dental hygiene. However, dentists should advise patients about the best way to care for their porcelain veneers and protect the underlying teeth.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR PORCELAIN VENEERS?

CRITERIA

Before undergoing any dental procedure, patients should consult with their dentist. That’s because there are several factors that patients cannot see on their own. Because veneers placement is so highly personalized, patients should be able to meet a few criteria. Therefore, it is the work of a dental professional to determine a good candidate. For example, only a certain degree of crookedness can be acceptable for veneers. Also, if the angle is slight enough, the dentist can use veneers to correct the problem on a basic level. There may be other underlying problems that must be fixed before a patient can be fitted with porcelain veneers.

TOOTH DECAY AND INFECTIONS

Tooth decay and infections of the gums must be addressed before veneers placement. Patients don’t necessarily need sufficient enamel to qualify for veneers when using the latest bonding systems. Patients who tend to grind their teeth can also benefit from veneers. Veneers placement can be used to correct the aesthetics, replace old fillings, and fix existing cavities.

Steps of Veneer Procedure

Below are 3 steps involved in veneer procedure:

    • INITIAL VISITPatients who have qualified for veneers placement should undergo consultations for x-rays and impressions. The next step that follows is called a mock-up, where a dentist creates a series of images to show the patient what he or she should expect as the end results. An experienced dentist like Dr. Chapnick will take a considerable amount of time to ensure his patients get the best care and the desired results.
    • PROCEDURE
During the procedure, dentists remove a small part of enamel from each tooth. This is meant to create a space for the porcelain veneer to adhere to. The removed layer of the enamel is then used to create a putty mold. After the hardening of the mold, it is then sent to a lab to create a veneer. In the meantime, temporary veneers are prepared and applied while the patients wait for the permanent ones.
After the permanent veneers arrive, dentists apply an acidic gel to dissolve minerals on the teeth surface so that the veneers can bond solidly to the rough surfaces. A special light is used to speed up the hardening process. It only takes a few minutes for the porcelain veneers to be bonded to the patients’ teeth.
  • RECOVERYRecovery is the easiest part. Actually, there’s almost no downtime. Some patients might just feel slight sensitivity to hot and cold drinks due to the enamel removed. Apart from that, patients can smile wide enough for the world to see their new pearly white teeth. Porcelain veneers can last for 10 years or beyond.

How Long do Porcelain Veneers Lasts?

How long your porcelain veneers will last vary depending on several factors. Veneers last for an average of 15 years but could also last for 20+ years. A veneer is likely to last longer if it is bonded to the tooth enamel instead of the dentin. Just like with other dental work, you may have to replace your porcelain veneers at some point in your life, depending on your age. Other factors that will determine how long your veneers last include how often you visit your dentist and your dental hygiene. Your veneers’ longevity will also depend on the underlying dental issues and how well they are treated. Avoiding habits like grinding your teeth, clenching, biting hard objects, or any other habit that could put excess pressure on your teeth could make your veneers last longer.

If you have any questions about porcelain veneers, including whether they are an ideal option for you, we will be happy to answer your questions.

How Much do Porcelain Veneers Cost?

Compared to composite resin veneers, porcelain veneers are more costly. However, even if they are more expensive, porcelain veneers last much longer than composite resin veneers. On average, the cost of porcelain veneers ranges between $1300 and $1600 per tooth. However, some dental clinics charge between $1200 and $2000 per tooth. The cost is inclusive of the clinic and the laboratory fees. Most dental insurance policies do not cover dental veneers because they consider them cosmetic procedures.

We can help you confirm whether veneers are covered under your dental insurance plan. Dental insurance plans may pay for dental veneers, especially when the teeth are broken, chipped, or heavily filled. The veneers’ cost will vary depending on factors like the types of veneers you choose and the brand name your dentist has available. Conventional veneers cost more than no-prep veneers. However, in the long run, traditional veneers are a more cost-effective option because they will serve you for many years.
