What to Do if Baby Teeth are Causing Pain

The process of having their ‘baby teeth’ or ‘primary teeth’ erupt can be painful for some children. If you think that your child may be experiencing pain as their teeth come in, there are a number of things that a pediatric dentist would recommend – rub the gums with a clean finger; rub the gums with the back of a small, cool spoon; or visit a pediatric dentist to get some over-the-counter medicine that may ease the pain. Of all the things that can be done to help baby/s teeth pain, what you should not do is use any kind of painkiller to rub on their gums; do not give a child teething biscuits which may contain added sugar; and to never ignore a fever. Sometimes, a parent can mistakenly believe that teething children are susceptible to other sicknesses such as fever, however this is not the case. If your child has a fever, you must check with your doctor immediately.

What to Know about Permanent Teeth that Come In

Permanent teeth will generally begin to replace the primary teeth around the age of six or seven. This process continues into one’s late teens as their third molars come in and is a long-term, extended process known to begin at the back of the mouth as the first set of molars come in. As permanent teeth are rising, baby teeth are beginning to fall out at the same time as their roots slowly begin to weaken and naturally the tooth lets go.

It is important to know that when a baby tooth falls out, there should be little bleeding. If your child is wiggling their baby teeth loose, this can be a dangerous practice to encourage as it can potentially result in pulling a tooth that is not yet ready to come out. In addition, do not be alarmed if the new permanent teeth coming in appear more yellow. This is normal.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD’S ORAL HEALTH?

What to Know about your Child’s Gums

Throughout this entire process, there exists other complications that can arise including most commonly cavities but also gum disease. Children are particularly prone to cavities, meaning that daily brushing and flossing is a necessity in order to prevent spreading. If your child’s gums are always sore, swollen or bleeding, take them to a dentist immediately as they may have an iteration of gum disease. This should be taken care of immediately.

How to Protect my Child’s Teeth and Gums

There are many things that can be done to protect your child’s oral health, as recommended by a pediatric dentist. These include to floss and brush on a daily basis. Knowing that babies like to put things into their mouths, keeping babies away from hard objects that could crack their teeth is a must. Also, children that are learning to walk tend to fall quite a bit and it is not uncommon for teeth to break, crack, or get knocked out entirely. If this happens, see a dentist immediately.
