Brushing your Baby’s Teeth

When Should I start brushing my Baby’s Teeth

When babies start to teethe many parents wonder how they should be caring for their baby’s teeth and one of the first questions for the pediatric dentist is when to start brushing the baby’s teeth. Your baby’s teeth will need brushing as soon as the first tooth begins to emerge, and even one tooth can be brushed, twice daily. This will let your baby become accustomed to having his or her teeth brushed in addition to practicing ideal dental health and hygiene, preventing issues and concerns as early in life as possible.

What Kind of Toothpaste Can Be Used on a Baby?

There is toothpaste specifically designed for babies and it has fluoride in it, which will protect teeth from cavities. If your child is under three years old the fluoride content should be under 1000 ppm (parts per million). Always feel free to ask your pediatric dentist for tips and advice on purchasing toothpaste for your baby.

You will only need a smear of toothpaste. A thin film covering less than three quarters of the toothbrush is ideal to clean the baby’s teeth.

What Toothbrush Is Needed for a Baby?

Most babies get their first tooth at approximately 6 months old, and it’s usually in the front and at the bottom of their mouth. This is just an average as some babies are actually born with teeth, while others still don’t have a single one by the time they are 12 months old. Eventually all babies will have 20 milk teeth by the time he or she is two and a half years old.

At first, when the baby’s teeth are just emerging or very small it may be easier to use a piece of gauze or muslin, wrapped around the finger with a tiny dab of toothpaste. However, there are toothbrushes for babies that also work well. They have a very small head and soft bristles. The toothbrush needs to be replaced every one to three months, or when the bristles start to spread out.

HOW DO YOU BRUSH A BABY’S TEETH?

How Much Times You Should Brush Your Baby’s Teeth?

Brush the baby’s teeth twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the evening, after your baby has had his or her last drink for the evening. Your baby can sit in your lap, facing away from you. This may be the easiest way to comfortably reach all of your baby’s teeth. Brush with a circular motion and focus on where the teeth meet the gums. Because babies are teething their gums and mouth may be sore and sensitive, so be gentle.

How to Care for your Baby’s Teeth?

Make sure your baby spits out excess toothpaste, but the baby does not need to rinse with water as a bit of leftover toothpaste in the mouth will help the product to work better. To learn more about dental hygiene our pediatric dentist will teach you how to care for your baby’s teeth.
