Fluoride Supplements

Should I Give my Baby Fluoride Supplements

Every parent wants the best for their baby’s dental health and whether or not to give fluoride supplements is one question that the pediatric dentist gets asked often. It’s great that so many parents are on top of their child’s dental hygiene from such a young age and want to learn more about how to take care of their baby’s teeth and prevent cavities. Before discussing fluoride supplements it’s important to know a couple of things about fluoride.

Suitable Treatment Methods For Your Baby

If your family has a history of early tooth decay you can bring this concern up with your pediatric dentist. If fluoride supplements are necessary, it will need to be prescribed by the dentist.

If you are very concerned about decay, there are other treatment methods that may be more suitable for your baby. One treatment is to apply a sealant on adult molars, once they have grown through the gums. This will protect the child’s teeth from food particles that may be hard to remove. There are also a number of rinses and mouth washes that the pediatric dentist can recommend. It is important to bring up any concerns with your child’s dentist to ensure that everything is being done possible to prevent cavities and dental disease.

What A Baby’s Toothpaste Should Not Contain?

Fluoride is a mineral that is found in soil, water and various foods. In fact, many people’s tap water for drinking includes fluoride already. Fluoride is included in public drinking water to prevent tooth decay throughout entire communities as fluoride is used to resist tooth decay and in some cases, can even reverse some decay that has already started.

Most dentists will not recommend fluoride supplements in addition to the fluoride that is already present in toothpaste and drinking water. A baby’s toothpaste should not contain more than 1000ppu (parts per unit) of fluoride and too much fluoride can cause dental fluorosis. This is a childhood condition that can cause a change to the appearance of your baby’s teeth. For many children this causes white specks to appear on every tooth. This however, is not very common as only 16% of children in Canada have a mild form of this condition.

Dental Hygiene Routine.

You may also want to consider X-rays as this can expose decay in between the teeth and knowing that your child is prone to cavities will offer valuable insight and more treatment and prevention can be added to the normal dental hygiene routine, at the discretion of the dentist.
