Basic Dental Care Tips to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

There’s a high chance that your dentist has emphasized enough on the importance of brushing and flossing your teeth daily, going for regular checkups and cleanings as well as watching what you eat. These simple steps can go a long way in making sure you keep dental problems at bay.

The benefits of practicing good oral habits include:

  • Prevent painful tooth decay and cavities
  • Prevent gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis that can lead to permanent tooth loss and damage the tissue and bones that support the teeth.
  • Save money by keeping gum diseases at bay. You also reduce the need for costly dental procedures like fillings which are required after tooth decay.
  • Prevent bad breath that can be embarrassing and lower your self-esteem. Taking care of your teeth gets rid of the bacteria that contributes to bad breath.
  • Prevent the teeth from staining and sustain your white and bright smile. Regular brushing and flossing helps to keep teeth white even after consuming foods and drinks that are known to stain the teeth.
  • Boost your overall health
  • Improve the health of your teeth and give yourself a bright and youthful smile for many years. With proper oral care, your teeth can last a lifetime.
  • With healthy teeth, you’ll also look forward to every dental visit.

How to avoid common dental problems

Here are a few ways to maintain proper health of your teeth and gums.

  • Brush your teeth after meals or at least twice daily – every morning and before you go to bed in the evening. This eliminates the risk of plaque buildup that contributes to gum disease and bad breath.
  • Choose a suitable toothpaste that contains fluoride. This important ingredient is what prevents decay and cavities. Consult your dentist Barrie if you need a special mouth rinse that contains fluoride or with other powerful ingredients that help to prevent plaque.
  • Avoid consuming sugary foods especially before you go to bed.
  • Avoid tobacco products because they not only stain your teeth but can also make you more prone to gum diseases and oral cancer.
  • Clean your tongue every day when brushing your teeth. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid causing damage to the gums and teeth.
  • Take all dental appointments seriously. If you don’t visit the dentist regularly for checkups, you may have dental problems that could get worse if untreated. Determine how often you need checkups and professional cleaning by consulting to your dentist.

Children as early as 6 months old may develop dental problems. It is important to consult your family dentist before the child’s first birthday and schedule visits after every 6 months, or according to what is recommended. If your child is having dental problems due to a disease, injury or growth issues, it is important to consult a pediatric dentist immediately. Children should be trained on how to maintain proper oral hygiene from a young age.

Our daughter was 5 weeks old when she had a frenectomy done at Molson Park Dental and we couldn’t be happier with the experience and end results. The entire team was so friendly and did such a wonderful job keeping me at ease during the procedure. Also, our daughter started nursing 100 times better immediately after the procedure was done. We can’t thank you enough for allowing us to continue our breastfeeding journey pain free and allowing our daughter the ability to nurse efficiently :)
