Removable versus Bonded Retainer: Which is Best?

After the active phase of orthodontic treatment comes the most exciting part; showing off your perfect smile. There is nothing more exciting than finally getting rid of the braces. Even so, you should be ready for one final step- the use of retainers. If you skip this step, your teeth might shift back to their original positions. Your teeth moving back to their original position can be disappointing more so when you consider the significant financial and time commitments that you made. The work of the retainers is to ensure the final results are permanent.

What are retainers?

These are custom devices that are built to hold the teeth in place after an orthodontic treatment. Your dentist will recommend two options: bonded (fixed) and removable retainers. In some treatments, you might be required to use both types but in most treatments, you will have a choice.

BONDED-RETAINERS

Bonded retainers

These retainers have to be put in by a dentist after the active phases of a smile makeover Barrie. The retainers are made of metal wire which is bonded to the back of the front teeth. It is the most effective retainer more so with the front teeth but it does have its pros and cons.

Pros

  • Ideal for people who might not wear the removable retainers as they are advised by an orthodontist
  • They are in place for 24 hours which means they are more effective
  • They are not visible because they are bonded directly to the back of your front teeth

Cons

  • They are not easy to clean. They are more prone to tartar and plaque accumulation.
  • You will need floss threaders or superfloss to floss under the wire. This can be inconvenient for some people.
  • They don’t prevent the back teeth from shifting back to the original position because they are only bonded to your front teeth.
  • Maintenance might be needed. The wire can become loose or break.

Removable retainers

This is the second option that you will have. It is made of plastic. You can also find one made of both metal wires and plastic.

Pros

  • Easier to clean because they are removable
  • You can wear and remove them at will
  • Aligns all the teeth and not just your front teeth

Cons

  • Efficacy is based on your compliance to wear them
  • Can be damaged or lost
  • If not worn consistently, the teeth can shift back to the original position
  • Retainer might not fit if you don’t wear it for a long period of time. This is because the teeth will have shifted.

Towards the end of the orthodontic treatment, you have to start thinking about the retainers. Without the retainers, your expenses will go down the drain when the teeth shift back to their original position. The use of retainers will help you preserve your smile. Make sure you talk to your dentist Barrie on the best retainers to fit your lifestyle. The important point is not to select a retainer simply for its aesthetic appeal but for its effectiveness.

Our daughter was 5 weeks old when she had a frenectomy done at Molson Park Dental and we couldn’t be happier with the experience and end results. The entire team was so friendly and did such a wonderful job keeping me at ease during the procedure. Also, our daughter started nursing 100 times better immediately after the procedure was done. We can’t thank you enough for allowing us to continue our breastfeeding journey pain free and allowing our daughter the ability to nurse efficiently :)
