Tooth Bonding

Barrie, Ontario - Canada

Not all healthy teeth look perfect. You can have a healthy smile that still has tooth imperfections causing you to conceal your smile from others. At Molson Park Dental Office, we understand that it is stressful to be ashamed of your teeth. In fact, others may view you as inherently unhappy or impolite if you cannot smile with confidence. If this sounds like your situation, cosmetic dentist Dr. Adam Chapnick has a variety of options to make your teeth healthy inside and out.

Tooth bonding, also called dental bonding, is one technique he uses to correct physical teeth imperfections, such as:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Misaligned teeth

How Tooth Bonding Alters the Look of Teeth

Dr. Chapnick and his team can use tooth bonding to alter the appearance of your teeth in just one office visit in most cases. Composite resin material, which has a putty-like consistency, is placed on your problem tooth. Dr. Chapnick molds the resin to your tooth in order to cover your tooth imperfection and shape your tooth to its proper dimensions. He uses his artistic abilities to make your tooth look like it did before it was damaged, or in some cases, even better.

What to Expect During Tooth Bonding

There are several steps involved in tooth bonding:

  • Tooth color decision: Composite resin is available in different tooth color shades. You will work together with Dr. Chapnick to decide which shade will be right for your smile.
  • Tooth preparation: Your tooth will be roughened slightly so the composite material will adhere better with your tooth.
  • Resin application: The composite material is applied to your tooth and hand-shaped to the perfect form.
  • Resin hardening: A high power light speeds up the bonding process between the composite resin and your natural tooth structure.
  • Trimming and polishing: Excess resin material is removed and your bonded tooth is polished to the perfect sheen.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Bonding

Tooth bonding has several advantages:

  • Keeps your natural tooth structure intact and requires little removal of tooth enamel
  • Can be done in one office visit
  • Is a fairly painless procedure for most patients
  • Is often less expensive than other procedures, such as porcelain veneers or dental crowns

The disadvantages include:

  • Less stain-resistant than porcelain material
  • May not be as strong or durable as porcelain material
  • May not be the appropriate treatment for back teeth
