Why the Right Dentist Makes a Difference – Combining Function and Aesthetics
Barrie, Ontario - Canada
With help from computers and lasers, dentistry has changed enormously over recent decades. The improvements in dental materials and technology have allowed cosmetic dentistry to develop new procedures and to give you pleasing results never possible for our grandparents.
Cosmetic dentistry is not usually taught in undergraduate dental schools. To become proficient in cosmetic dentistry techniques and materials, a general dentist must pursue graduate studies at an advanced institution of learning. Dr. Chapnick has done training at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI). LVI attracts dentists from all over the world and offers both theoretical and hands-on training with rigorous standards.
Dr. Chapnick has also taken other extensive graduate classes with Dr. Frank Spear of Spear® Education in Scottsdale, AZ.
Some general dentists offer cosmetic dentistry procedures on the side without going through the post-graduate training. This virtually assures you of sub-standard results. One of the top reasons for choosing a properly-trained cosmetic dentist is to avoid having procedures repeated to correct poor results. Dr. Chapnick does not do any one-size-fits-all dental work – he tailors all procedures for each individual, using his trained eye to determine the best shapes and proportions for you.
How Are Function and Aesthetics Combined?
Teeth should function properly before changes are made for aesthetic reasons. If you have a misaligned bite, for example, that must be addressed to make your smile healthy and comfortable as well as attractive. A misaligned bite can involve both misaligned jaw joints and misaligned teeth. Each of those can cause the other, creating a painful condition known as TMD or TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder).
Dr. Chapnick is a trained neuromuscular dentist who can diagnose and treat TMD. If you have TMD and would like a smile makeover, he will approach each with an eye to the other. A smile makeover must be properly designed before any work is done, and the bite must be aligned as part of improving your smile.
A Coordinated Approach
Dr. Chapnick will do more than just a standard dental examination. He will assess your entire facial shape, looking at the way your lips move when you smile, the shape of your cheeks and lower face when you smile, your coloring, and even your personality. He will also assess your bite, measuring your jaw muscle electrical activity and jaw muscle movements and recording your jaw joint sounds when appropriate.
Dr. Chapnick will then discuss his findings with you and explain the ways he could correct health problems and enhance your smile at the same time. If you would like to go ahead, you can determine together where to start and what time frame to use. All the work will be coordinated with no gaps or overlapping in dental work and a minimum time spent in the dental chair. All work will be done in the most efficient way possible.
Minimally invasive work can give dramatic results and Dr. Chapnick has the knowledge of cosmetic dentistry to choose just the right procedures for you without overdoing anything.
