Questions about Invisalign

Barrie, Ontario - Canada

What kinds of dental problems can Invisalign fix?

Most people are aware that Invisalign can correct crooked teeth. But Dr. Adam Chapnick also uses Invisalign to correct such problems as:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth
  • Jaw misalignment

Jaw misalignment can be caused by overbites, underbites and crossbites. These situations can result in stress on your jaw joints and overcompensation of your face, neck and shoulder muscles to correct the problem. Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD/TMJ) is an often painful condition that can be alleviated through the use of Invisalign.

Is Invisalign safe?

Yes. Invisalign has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Class II medical device. The plastic aligner trays are made of polyurethane resins that are safe for individuals to use in the mouth for extended periods of time. They are not made of Bisphenol-A (BPA) or phthalate plasticizers.

What is it like to wear Invisalign?

Invisalign aligner trays can be compared to professional tooth whitening trays. They are made to fit your teeth snugly and give the appropriate amount of gentle force necessary to shift the teeth gradually. When you first begin wearing Invisalign trays, it may feel a bit strange in your mouth and it may take a couple of days to get used to talking with the aligners. The majority of patients become accustomed to the aligners very quickly.

Do the Invisalign trays hurt?

The goal of Invisalign is to gradually shift your teeth. Any time your teeth are being moved within your mouth, you will probably feel some discomfort. Most patients experience slight soreness or pressure when they begin wearing each new set of aligners. These feelings tend to subside after a couple of days.

Invisalign typically does not result in the type of pain that can be felt with the tightening of traditional metal braces.

Can I eat whatever I want with Invisalign?

You can eat whatever you want when you have removed your Invisalign aligners. We encourage you to follow a healthy diet to ensure your overall dental health, but you are free to eat as you choose.

After you have eaten, it is very important to brush your teeth before you put your aligner trays back onto your teeth. This will help keep bacteria from forming on your teeth causing tooth decay and bad breath.

We advise against chewing gum while wearing your Invisalign aligners, as gum will get stuck. We also advise patients to avoid smoking when wearing Invisalign because the aligner trays can become yellowed, thus making them less "invisible."
