Questions about Dental Veneers

Barrie, Ontario - Canada

What will my dental veneers look and feel like?

Dental Implants - Cosmetic Dentist

The beauty of dental veneers, and the reason why porcelain veneers are so popular today, is that they look and feel like your natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are extremely thin shells that require very little removal of your tooth enamel to allow them to properly blend with your adjacent teeth. The ceramic material mimics natural tooth enamel in its translucency and opacity, and the color is matched to your other teeth so they blend nicely.

When the procedure is done by an experienced cosmetic dentist like Dr. Adam Chapnick, other people will be hard pressed to know which of your teeth have been restored with porcelain veneers. You may begin to view them as your natural teeth over time as well.

Do dental veneers require special care

Although they are very durable, porcelain veneers can become chipped or dislodged if you:

  • Bite hard objects
  • Use your teeth as openers
  • Do not wear a mouthguard during sports
  • Grind or clench your teeth

If you make smart decisions, avoid harmful habits and treat all of your teeth with respect, you should have no problems with your porcelain veneers.

Do I have to worry about getting cavities on teeth with dental veneers?

Yes. Porcelain veneers only cover the front portion of your teeth, so they do not shield you against the possibility of tooth decay or gum disease. It is important to care for teeth with porcelain veneers the same way you would your other teeth.

  • Practice good dental hygiene by brushing your teeth twice each day and flossing once a day
  • Watch for signs of redness, bleeding or puffiness in your gums
  • Visit your dentist every six months to keep your teeth free of plaque and tartar
  • Notify your dentist immediately if you feel any discomfort with your dental veneers

Can I whiten my teeth if I have dental veneers?

Porcelain veneers are stain resistant, which means they will not be affected by tooth whitening bleaches. If you think you would like your teeth to be whiter, it is advisable to have that procedure done before being fitted for dental veneers. Then Dr. Chapnick will be able to select a dental porcelain shade that matches your bright new smile.

How will I decide what type of dental veneer is right for me?

Dr. Chapnick and his team offer two different porcelain veneer options: Empress veneers and Lumineers. He can fully explain the differences between these two options as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each. He will also discuss the cost of porcelain veneers during a consultation visit. After seeing your own unique dental concerns he will make a recommendation for treatment, but it is ultimately your choice on how to proceed.
