Early Detection of Periodontal Disease is Key

Periodontal disease is preventable. As an individual you can only look for the warning signs of gum disease. By the time your symptoms are visible, you may have already entered into a more critical stage of the disease.

When you visit Molson Park Dental Office for a regular dental cleaning and check-up, our experienced dental hygienists are always on the lookout for areas of concern. We analyze your gums using x-rays and dental tools to:

• Examine the condition of your gums, including the shape, color and size
• Identify areas of bleeding
• Detect areas where your gums are receding or the gums have pulled away from your tooth
• Look for areas of plaque deposits

If you wait too long between dental visits, these conditions can fester and develop into full-blown periodontal disease. We typically recommend that you visit our office every six months; however, if you have gum disease we want to see you more often until the problem is resolved.

Treatment Options for Gum Disease

Good dental hygiene is your first step toward preventing gum disease in the first place. The treatment plan we recommend will be based on how severe your condition is. We use a customized approach to every patient’s gum disease treatment, which can include:

• Scaling, which removes plaque and hardened tartar that have formed along and below the gum line
• Root planing, which creates a more smooth tooth root surface, making it more difficult for the plaque to attach
• Antibacterial rinses or other chemical methods
• Tooth replacement procedures such as dental implants, if necessary
• Antibiotics
