Endodontics - Root Canal

Barrie, Ontario - Canada

Sometimes life gets in the way of regular trips to the dentist. Not everyone who avoids the dentist will have serious consequences, but more often than not your body will begin to alert you to the fact that something is wrong. Often that "something" is an infected or seriously decayed tooth. Dr. Adam Chapnick is an endodontist who is specially trained to provide treatment for this condition through root canals.

Dr. Chapnick and his team almost always prefer to do everything possible to save a tooth rather than extract it. The more natural tooth structures you can keep in your mouth, the healthier your mouth will be.

Signs You May Have an Infected Tooth

Pain, discomfort and sensitivity should not be regular sensations in your mouth. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact Dr. Chapnick as soon as possible to have your teeth examined. Infected tooth symptoms can also be accompanied by:

  • Tooth discoloration
  • Gum swelling
  • Unpleasant taste in your mouth

What Happens in Tooth Infections

Tooth infections do not happen overnight. There are several ways a tooth can become infected:

  • When you develop tooth decay that goes untreated, the decay can begin to make its way down into the center of your tooth (root canal), which comprises the nerves, veins and arteries of the pulp tissue.
  • Untreated gum disease can create a situation where the infection attacks the root of the tooth.
  • Trauma to a tooth can lead to death of its pulp tissue.

Over time the infected tooth root can form a pus-filled abscess that begins to break down your jawbone, creating a very serious dental problem.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

The sooner an infected tooth is treated, the easier it is to perform the root canal. The area is numbed with a local anesthesia and a hole is drilled into the tooth so all of the infection can be removed. Some teeth have only one root canal and others can have up to four root canals. Depending on the severity of your infection, you may need one or more areas cleaned.

Dr. Chapnick fully cleans the area and then takes a digital x-ray of the area to make sure the tooth is free from the infection. The tooth root is then sealed and fitted for a tooth crown to provide protection and strength to your natural tooth.

Endodontist Dr. Adam Chapnick enjoys helping people become free from infected tooth pain and discomfort by performing root canals.
